KEYBOARD INPUT PROGRAMS
BBC Model B, B+ & Master 128
Alan Nixon
Freely copiable for educational use in UK
----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES FOR USE
This disc runs under the disc filing system (DFS). If using a BBC
Master 128 you should configure it for DFS or alternatively type *DISC
before using the disc.
The disc contains 11 programs intended for use in the areas of special
needs and early learning. The reading age requirement, where
appropriate, is between 5 and 6 years. All programs use the keyboard
for input though the level of keyboard competence needed varies
considerably. The five 'mazes' programs can also be controlled using
the AB (Star) Concept keyboard. All five use the same overlay.
The disc menu allows easy loading and running of all the programs on
the disc and is implemented using SHIFT/BREAK in the normal way (hold
down one of the SHIFT keys and while holding it press and release the
BREAK key). The disc menu can be retrieved at any time during the
running of any program by pressing BREAK.
Some of the programs are controlled through their own menus and each
has its own instruction page(s). With the exception of PALACE1 and
PALACE2, pressing the ESCAPE key at any time during running will
return the program to its menu or instruction page.
As some of the programs access the disc during execution, the disc
should remain in the drive during program use.
CTRL/BREAK at any time will reset the computer and restore the
power-up message.
You are strongly advised to make a backup copy of this disc for your
own use, keeping your original in a safe place.

FURTHER COPIES OF THIS USER GUIDE CAN BE PRINTED BY CHOOSING
'INSTRUCTIONS' FROM THE DISC MENU

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Q/K = QWERTY keyboard C/K = Concept keyboard
FINDIT (Q/K)
This is a keyboard familiarisation game in the "Invader" style.
Letters and numbers descend the screen and can only be stopped by
pressing the correct keyboard key.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
SNAP (Q/K)
A 2 player snap game which contains a list of 20 words. However you
can create your own lists of words, numbers etc. from within the
program and save them on disc for future use. The list creation
section of the program can be accessed from the main program menu.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
GOLD! (Q/K)
A matrix of boxes contains hidden gold in one location. Find it by
typing in the co-ordinates of your guess (in the form A4 C3 etc).
Clues are given after each guess in the form of compass directions (8
points). There are 2 difficulty levels.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
ODD ONE (Q/K)
An odd-one-out game with items displayed in pairs. Move the arrow
(with the space bar) to indicate the odd-one-out. Press RETURN to
confirm your choice. The program contains a list of items for use by
the game but you can create and save your own lists of words, numbers
or symbols from within the program. The list creation section can be
accessed from the main program menu.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
MAZES (Q/K or C/K)
Guide a cartoon character (called Sid) through a series of
2-dimensional mazes moving only on the yellow squares and avoiding the
red ones. Sid can be moved using the cursor (arrow) keys or (F)orward
(B)ackward (L)eft (R)ight or (N)orth (S)outh (W)est (E)ast on the
QWERTY or concept keyboard. Eight mazes of ascending difficulty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
MAZER (Q/K or C/K)
Similar format to "MAZES" but Sid's movement is not immediate. A
single move command or a series of commands can be typed in but will
not be executed until RETURN is pressed. Thus each maze can be
attempted in stages or (the ultimate aim) in one go. Each maze is
Page 2
contained in an 11 x 8 matrix of squares. There are 6 mazes of
ascending difficulty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
M/MAZER (Q/K or C/K)
Companion program to "MAZER". Using the "MAZER" format, this program
allows children to create their own maze designs, play them and save
them onto disc for future use. Mazes can be designed at the keyboard
by moving Sid around and using the COPY key to change the colour of
squares. Saving and loading maze designs is simple and the program
displays the names of all mazes already saved on the disc.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
STARS (Q/K or C/K)
Same format, controls and screen layout as "MAZER" but this time the
object is to collect all the stars which appear, one in each red
square. There are 6 screens of ascending difficulty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
M/STARS (Q/K or C/K)
Companion program to "STARS" allowing children to design their own
star screens, play them and save them onto disc. Same facilities as
"M/MAZER".
----------------------------------------------------------------------
PALACE1 (Q/K)
An adventure-type game in which the objective is to escape from the
Puzzle Palace. There are 7 rooms and all must be visited. Each room
contains a task which if successfully completed reveals a word which
will be needed for escape.
The game begins in the entrance hall and entry to any room is achieved
by keying in a number from 1 to 7. Sucessful completion of each task
(or pressing the ESCAPE key while in any room) will return you to the
entrance hall again. Your position in the game can be saved onto disc
by pressing ESCAPE while in the entrance hall. You can then finish the
game from this position at another time.
Tasks include anagrams, missing letters, counting, addition and a
maze.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
PALACE2 (Q/K)
An adventure-type game somewhat more difficult than "PALACE1". Once
again the objective is to escape. There are 9 rooms and movement
between rooms is effected by keying in compass directions (4 points).
There is more than one exit.
Each room contains a task which if successfully completed gains you an
object which may or may not be useful in your escape. You can move
through rooms without attempting the tasks, in order to explore the
layout of the building and find the exits (which are always in the
Page 3
external walls). This may well be the best approach for new players.
As with "PALACE1" your position in the game can be saved onto disc at
any stage and the program keeps a record of the best completion time.
The location of the objects, tasks and exits vary with each game.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
DATA FILES AND DISC SPACE
The programs "SNAP", ODD ONE", "M/MAZER" and "M/STARS" allow users to
create data files and save them onto disc for subsequent re-use. There
is little space left for data files on this disc. If you intend to
make extensive use of this facility, you should copy each of these
programs onto a blank formatted disc. In the case of" M/MAZER" and
"M/STARS" the file "K.SIDNEY" must also be copied onto the new disc.
Each new disc will then have sufficient space for up to 30 separate
data files.
To copy a program use the *COPY command. Taking "M/MAZER" as an
example:
USING A SINGLE DRIVE
1. Type *COPY 0 0 M/MAZER
2. Press RETURN
2. Follow screen instructions for swapping the discs.
USING A TWIN DRIVE
1. Place original disc in drive 0 and new disc in drive 1.
2. Type *COPY 0 1 M/MAZER
3. Press RETURN
Copying will proceed automatically.
To run the program from the new disc type
CHAIN"M/MAZER" <press RETURN>
Alternatively refer to the disc user guide for instructions on
creating a !BOOT file.
